Reviewing The Fault in Our Stars

I know it’s a bit late to post a review for TFIOS but I’m still having a hang-over from the movie which is really, really not like most of the book-to-movie adaptation where series of things are cut-off and changed. The movie is just like the book. It’s what I actually visualized when I read John Green’s The Fault in our Stars last year.  Well, I didn’t know who would play the roles but Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort did the job really great. I can’t imagine anyone else play the role apart from them after the success of this movie.

I watched the movie on its first day in the cinemas. It was already out in Cebu at June 5. I was actually looking forward to watch Maleficent that night but upon seeing TFIOS on the cinema schedule, I changed my mind in an instant and I forced my office mates to come along. My office mate are not bookworms like me so when I told them that the story is awesome and tear-jerking, they were having second thoughts since they were thinking that I might spoil them and that maybe the movie is not that nice since I kind of have a different taste on some things and they were thinking that I’m more of a sci-fi and superhero movie/book addict than a tear-jerking teenage love story.

So, let’s go back to reviewing the movie. I have to say that it is like reading the book all over again. Every line, every setting and every detail was just like the book.  My officemate and I were giggling when Gus threw the killer line...

“It’s a privilege to have my heart be broken by you”

and the heart melting...

“I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.”

We literally laughed out loud with the egg-throwing scene at Monica's house and Gus telling Monica’s mom to just go back inside the house with his additional punch line...

We have five legs, four eyes, two and a half pairs of working lungs but we also have two dozen eggs”. It was hilarious.

A TFIOS inspired doodle I made. See it on my Instagram

What made my other office mate cry a river was when Hazel delivered her eulogy for Gus. My eyes were all watery by then while listening to her say...

“Some things are bigger than other infinities” and “You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful.”

Not so long before the movie was released, the tagline "It's a Sick Love Story" earned quite some controversy since some fans are didn't like it but some of course love it. As for me, I find it appealing. If you haven't read the book, you would be very curious. How in the world would a love story be sick, right? But it is, literally. You won't be sick physically sick watching it but you will definitely feel the pain (because it demands to be felt..lolx) emotionally.

There were parts of the book of course, like most movies that was not included in the film but it didn't affect the movie in the whole sense. I'm already thinking that Shailene Woodley would be hailed "Queen of All YA Book-Movie Adaptation" heroine. She deserves to be so, in my own opinion since she jumped from the building from Divergent to dragging an oxygen in TFIOS.

Another 5 star rate to TFIOS... and this is John Green's fault.. :)

  1. I read this book and I remember not liking it as much as my other friends did. I don't know why, I guess sappy, sad stories are not my thing. And I know I'm in the minority. But maybe I just have to read it again and then I'll watch the movie. Baka mas maappreciate ko this time. :)
